ABSTRACT Toxic levels of aluminum (Al) in the soil can reduce the growth of different grain crops. To understand the effects of Al in soybean (Glycine max L.) seedlings Al accumulation and its effect on anatomy, morphology, and metabolism in roots of two soybean genotypes were evaluated: Suprema and A7002. For this, soybean plants were grown in nutrient Clark solution, pH 4.0, without Al (control) and with 100 µM of Al for 72 hours. Both genotypes accumulated Al in the roots, however, Suprema showed a higher Al accumulation than A7002. The latter genotype showed Al accumulated only in the cell walls of the epidermis and root cap, which did not affect root growth. On the other hand, in Suprema, Al accumulated in the cells of the root cap, epidermis, and the nucleus of the ground meristem cells, which resulted in inhibited root growth and structural damage in the root epidermis cells. Al modulated the primary metabolism with increases in the levels of glucose, fructose, sucrose, and malate in the roots of the genotype A7002 and reduced the starch levels in the Suprema genotype. The findings of this study suggest the A7002 genotype seems to be more resistant to Al than Suprema, mainly by the use of two important mechanisms: an increase in malate content and Al immobilization in the external cells of the root.

RESUMO: A análise química de flores tem sido estudada em algumas culturas. Para o cafeeiro, a análise do tecido floral possibilitaria a antecipação do diagnóstico nutricional das lavouras. O estudo objetivou (i) comparar a composição mineral de flores e de folhas de cafeeiros (ii) e gerar normas para diagnose nutricional do cafeeiro com base na análise de tecidos de flores e folhas das plantas. Para isso, foram avaliados os teores de nutrientes em flores e folhas e a produtividade de café em 26 lavouras comerciais na região de Manhuaçu, MG, durante três anos. As faixas críticas de nutrientes determinadas em flores são: 2,78 - 3,17; 0,23 - 0,28; 2,80 - 3,12; 0,30 - 0,37; 0,24 - 0,30; 0,15 - 0,18 dag kg-1 de N, P, K, Ca, Mg e S, e 17 - 21; 12 - 18; 52 - 80; 26 - 43 e 28 - 48 mg kg-1 para Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe e B, respectivamente. As faixas críticas de nutrientes em folhas foram: 2,63 - 2,86; 0,13 - 0,14; 2,13 - 2,33; 1,04 - 1,22; 0,27 - 0,33; 0,15 - 0,18 dag kg-1 de N, P, K, Ca, Mg e S, e 9 - 14; 15 - 23; 80 - 115; 99 - 148 e 31 - 37 mg kg-1 para Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe e B, respectivamente. A diagnose nutricional do cafeeiro, quanto aos nutrientes N, P, Ca, Fe, Cu e Mn, pode ser antecipada por meio da análise de flores.

ABSTRACT: The chemical analysis of flowers has been studied for some crops. In coffee trees, the flower tissue analysis could anticipate the nutritional diagnosis. This study aimed to: (i) compare the mineral composition of coffee flowers and leaves; and to (ii) generate reference values for nutritional diagnosis of coffee trees, based on flower and leaf analysis. Nutrient content of flowers and leaves and coffee productivity were evaluated in 26 commercial farms located in Manhuaçu, MG, Brazil throughout three years. The critical nutrient content range in flowers are respectively: 2.78 - 3.17, 0.23 - 0.28, 2.80 - 3.12, 0.30 - 0.37, 0.24 - 0.30, 0.15 - 0.18 dag kg-1 of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S; and 17 - 21, 12 - 18, 52 - 80, 26 - 43, and 28 - 48 mg kg-1 of Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, and B. For leaves, the critical nutrient ranges are respectively: 2.63 - 2.86, 0.13 - 0.14, 2.13 - 2.33, 1.04 - 1.22, 0.27 - 0.33, 0.15 - 0.18 dag kg-1 of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S; and 9 - 14, 15 - 23, 80 - 115, 99 - 148, and 31 - 37 mg kg-1 of Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, and B. The nutritional diagnosis of coffee trees for N, P, Ca, Fe, Cu, and Mn can be anticipated using flower analysis.

ABSTRACT For the development of nutrient budget models to recommend lime and fertilizers for agricultural and forestry crops, curves of plant growth and nutrient accumulation are required. Information about how nutrients are partitioned between the different plant organs is also necessary, but still scarce for pine in Brazil. This study evaluated the growth, biomass partitioning, and nutrient dynamics in pine forests in southern Brazil. To this end, we assessed unthinned 2, 4, 6, and 8-year-old stands of Pinus taeda L. Three plots of 20 × 30 m per stand were delimited, in which three trees of different classes of diameter at breast height (DBH) were chosen. These trees were measured, felled, and the weight of their fresh components (leaves, branches, bark, and wood) was evaluated. Samples of each tree compartment and from the forest litter were taken to determine dry weight and nutrient content. From trees of the mean DBH class, the roots were also collected and the dry weight and nutrient contents determined. The same sampling procedure was carried out with soil for physical and chemical characterization. Regression models were adjusted to estimate growth, nutrient uptake, and nutrient use efficiency of pine trees, based on data collected in this and previous studies. The equations developed in this research can be used in nutrient budget models as well as in other simulation models, to establish recommendations of lime and fertilizers for Pinus taeda stands in southern Brazil.

O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, com o objetivo de avaliar o crescimento inicial, a eficiência de uso do P e frações de fósforo em três espécies florestais submetidas a quatro níveis de P. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial (3 x 4) com três repetições. Mudas de gonçalo-alves (Astronium fraxinifolium Schott) e barbatimão (Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville), espécies nativas do Cerrado, e acácia-australiana (Acacia mangium Willd.), espécie exótica, foram cultivadas em Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo adubado com 0, 150, 300 e 600 mg dm-3 de P.Aos 240 dias após a emergência, as plantas foram avaliadas quanto a altura, diâmetro do colo, produção de matéria seca, fósforo total solúvel em ácido e frações de P. As diferentes doses de fósforo influenciaram o crescimento inicial, a absorção e os teores totais e das frações de P, nas três espécies. A espécie acácia-australiana apresentou maior crescimento em relação às espécies nativas nas maiores doses de P. As espécies do Cerrado, por sua vez, apresentaram maior investimento em raízes e maior armazenamento de fósforo em formas inorgânicas, com destaque para o barbatimão. A relação P inorgânico:P orgânico mostrou-se adequada para a avaliação do status nutricional de P de espécies florestais.

The experiment under greenhouse conditions was carried out at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, aiming to evaluate the initial growth, efficiency of use of P and phosphorus content in three forest species submitted to four levels of P. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial arrangement 3 x 4, with three replicates. Seedlings of Astronium fraxinifolium Schott and Stryphnodendron Adstringens (Mart.) Coville, Cerrado native species, and Acacia mangium Willd., an exotic specie, were cultivated on a Red-Yellow Latosol treated with four phosphorous levels (0, 150, 300 e 600 mg dm-3). After 240 days from the plants emergence the following variables were determined: height, root collar diameter, dry weight production, total phosphorous soluble in acid and P fractions. Different phosphorus doses influenced the initial growth, absorption, total content and content of P fractions in the three studied species. Acacia mangium presented higher growth in the higher doses of phosphorus, in relation to the native species. The Cerrado species had higher enhancement of root and P storage ability in inorganic forms, standing out Stryphnodendron adstringens. The relation inorganic P:organic P was considered as suitable for the P nutritional status evaluation of forest species.

Respostas não conclusivas do cafeeiro adulto à fertilização com fósforo têm sido reportadas na literatura, de modo particular quando se trata da aplicação desse nutriente em sistemas adensados de plantio. Assim, este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a resposta de cafeeiros adensados adultos, em franca produção, quanto à produtividade e bienalidade, à adição de diferentes fontes e doses de P, na região da Zona da Mata de Minas Gerais. O experimento, com cafeeiros da variedade Catucaí Amarelo 6/30, foi conduzido durante quatro safras. A matriz experimental utilizada foi o fatorial completo [(4 × 3)+1], composto por quatro fontes (fosfato monoamônico, superfosfato simples, fosfato natural reativo da Argélia (Djebel-Onk) e FH 550®), três doses de P (100, 200, e 400 kg ha-1 ano-1 de P2O5) e um tratamento adicional, correspondente à dose de 0 kg ha-¹ ano-¹ de P2O5. O delineamento utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com três repetições. As quatro safras constituíram faixas no tempo. Houve aumento dos teores de P no solo e nas folhas do cafeeiro com o aumento das doses aplicadas. Apesar disso, não houve efeito da adição de P sobre a produtividade e a bienalidade da produção das plantas, independentemente da fonte utilizada ao longo das quatro safras avaliadas.

Inconclusive responses of the adult coffee plant to phosphorus fertilization have been reported in the literature, especially when dealing with application of this nutrient in high density planting systems. Thus, this study was carried out for the purpose of assessing the response of adult coffee plants at high planting density in full production (in regard to yield and their biennial cycle/stability) to the addition of different sources and application rates of P in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experiment with coffee plants of the Catucaí Amarelo 6/30 variety was carried out over four growing seasons. Treatments were arranged in a full factorial design [(4 × 3) + 1] consisting of four P sources (monoammonium phosphate, simple superphosphate, natural reactive rock phosphate from Algeria (Djebel-Onk), and FH 550®), three P rates (100, 200, and 400 kg ha-1 year-1 of P2O5), and an additional treatment without application of the nutrient (0 kg ha-¹ year-¹). A randomized block experimental design was used with three replicates. The four seasons were evaluated as subplots in a split plot experiment. The P contents in soil and leaves increased with increased rates of P application. However, there was no effect from P application on the yield and its biennial cycle/stability regardless of the source used over the four seasons assessed.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da adubação com N e K sobre a produtividade e a bienalidade de produção de cafeeiros em plantio adensado, em estudo de longa duração. Foram avaliados dois experimentos, na região da Zona da Mata de Minas Gerais, conduzidos em blocos ao acaso, com parcelas subdivididas no tempo. No primeiro experimento, realizado no espaçamento de 1,5x0,7 m (9.523 plantas por hectare), foram avaliados os efeitos de sete doses de N + K2O na proporção 1:1 (0, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1.000 e 1.200 kg ha‑1 por ano), durante oito safras (2001/2002 a 2008/2009). Como o fertilizante utilizado tinha proporção 1:1, para obter a dose utilizada de cada elemento (N ou K2O), deve-se dividir a dose total por dois. O segundo experimento foi conduzido no espaçamento de 2,5x0,6 m (6.666 plantas por hectare), em arranjo fatorial, com cinco doses de N (0, 150, 300, 450 e 600 kg ha‑1 por ano) e cinco doses de K2O (0, 150, 300, 450 e 600 kg ha‑1 por ano), durante seis safras (2005/2006 a 2010/2011). As doses associadas à máxima produtividade de café beneficiado variaram de 424 a 560 kg ha‑1, para N, e de 21 a 338 kg ha‑1, para K2O. A adubação com N reduz os efeitos da bienalidade da produção do cafeeiro, e a adubação com K, em anos de baixa produtividade, favorece a recuperação da produtividade do cafeeiro no ano seguinte.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of N and K fertilization on the yield and production bienniality of dense coffee plantations, in a long‑term study. Two experiments were evaluated in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, under a randomized complete block design, split‑plotted in time. In the first experiment, carried out with 1.5x0.7 m spacing (9,523 plants per hectare), the effects of seven doses of N + K2O in the proportion of 1:1 were evaluated (0, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1,000, and 1,200 kg ha‑1 per year) during eight crop seasons (2001/2002 to 2008/2009). Since the fertilizer had 1:1 proportion, in order to obtain the dose for each nutrient (N or K2O), the total dose must be divided by two. The second experiment was done with 2.5x0.6 spacing (6,666 plants per hectare), under a factorial arrangement, with five doses of N (0, 150, 300, 450, and 600 kg ha‑1 per year) and five doses of K2O (0, 150, 300, 450, and 600 kg ha‑1 per year), during six crop seasons (2005/2006 to 2010/2011). The doses related to the maximum yield of processed coffee ranged from 424 to 560 kg ha‑1, for N, and from 21 to 338 kg ha‑1, for K2O. Nitrogen fertilization reduces the effect of production bienniality of coffee plants, and K2O fertilization, in years of low productivity, promotes yield recovery of coffee plants in the next year.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar a qualidade física, fisiológica e sanitária de sementes de 17 variedades de milho crioulo antes e após armazenagem em garrafas PET e comparar os resultados aos padrões já estabelecidos para comercialização de cultivares comerciais de milho. Foram realizados os testes de pureza física, retenção de peneiras, massa de 1000 sementes, grau de umidade, germinação, emergência em canteiro, índices de velocidade de germinação e emergência das sementes, além de exame de sementes infestadas. Pelos resultados obtidos, é possível concluir que as sementes de milho crioulo das diferentes variedades apresentam alta porcentagem de pureza física e germinação mesmo após o armazenamento, com valores acima dos padrões mínimos exigidos para comercialização de sementes de milho (98 e 85%, respectivamente). O grau de umidade das sementes das diferentes variedades de milho crioulo antes e após o armazenamento permaneceu abaixo de 13%, destacando-se a aptidão da região norte de Minas Gerais para a produção e conservação de sementes de qualidade. Três variedades apresentaram porcentagem de infestação superior ao padrão máximo recomendado (3%), sendo, portanto, necessário aprimorar o controle de pragas de grãos armazenados. São necessárias melhorias para uniformização de classificação das sementes por peneiras, já que as amostras de três variedades não alcançaram o padrão mínimo de 94% em uma mesma peneira, exigido pela legislação.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the physical, physiological and sanitary quality of corn seeds of 17 maize varieties (landraces) before and after storage in PET bottles. The seeds were submitted to the following tests: physical purity, retention on sieves, weight of 1000 seeds, germination, seed moisture content, emergence in flowerbed, infested seed exam and seed health (deep-freezing method). Germination and emergence velocity index were determined. Maize landraces seeds of different varieties presented a great percentage of physical purity and germination, which were over the minimum standards values required for commercialization of corn seeds (98 and 85%, respectively), even after storage. Seed moisture content remained below 13% before and after storage, standing out the potential of Nothern Minas Gerais for production and conservation of high-quality seeds. Three varieties presented infestation higher than the maximum values accepted for corn seeds commercialization (3%), indicating the need of better pests control during storage. Samples of three varieties have not reached satisfy standard values of retention on the same sieve (94%), indicating the need of better standardization on size classification of some seed lots.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as alterações na fertilidade do solo, na nutrição mineral e na produtividade de bananeira irrigada por dez anos. O experimento foi conduzido em Latossolo Vermelho eutrófico, de 1997 a 2007, no Município de Janaúba, MG, em um plantio comercial de banana 'Prata-Anã', onde se utilizam, para irrigação por gotejamento, água calcária de poço tubular com salinidade alta e concentração média de sódio. Observou-se que a aplicação da irrigação, por dez anos, promove forte elevação no pH e na condutividade elétrica do solo e desequilíbrios nutricionais, o que limita a produtividade da bananeira. Os teores foliares de macro e micronutrientes permanecem acima dos valores de referência para a cultura.

The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in soil fertility, in plant mineral nutrition and in the productivity of banana irrigated for a ten-year period. The experiment was carried out in an Oxisol, from 1997 to 2007, in the county of Janaúba, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in a commercial banana 'Prata-Anã' (AAB) plantation, where water from a tubular deep-well - containing high salinity and medium concentration of sodium - was used for drip irrigation. The use of irrigation for ten years promotes a sharp rise in pH and in soil electrical conductivity, and causes nutrient imbalances, which limits the productivity of banana. The foliar levels of macro and micronutrientes remain above the reference values for the culture.
